DOOM METAL!!! Is there a better pairing of words? There might be, but there aren’t many. Off the top of my head, a few might be “free beer”, “chicken nuggets”, and “Meathook Sodomy”. That said, there’s a certain magic about “Doom Metal”. Anyway, let’s get on with the review.
Ireland’s Brigantia have been around since 2007, and if you’re anything like me you’ve never heard of them. This isn’t helped by their woeful output over the last thirteen years. Two demos, a single, and an EP. But, what actually shocked me was that they’ve written a total of eleven songs in thirteen years!!! And here I was lamenting the laziness of my own band. Fuck! I still haven’t started reviewing the music.
There’s a real 70’s vibe to Brigantia‘s “Midnight” EP. Lots of long, winding riffs. Imagine Black Sabbath had Iron Butterfly bent over in a dimly lit room and were giving them a damn good seeing to. Then Cathedral walks in and is like: What the fuck is going on here? Before anyone can say a word, Cathedral has whipped their gear off and a ménage à trois has broken out. No one’s going to complain, but it wasn’t what you were expecting at the start of the night.
You can probably guess, given my description, that Brigantia aren’t breaking any new musical ground. But, who gives a shit? This is rock solid stuff. The “Midnight” EP is a really, really enjoyable listen. Let’s hope Brigantia can up their output, because I’d love to hear an album from these guys sometime in the next decade.
