The Best Albums of 2019 So Far: Staff Picks

The first half of 2019 has passed and it is about time to see who has been hitting the right notes here in the The Metal Wanderlust HQ the most so far. Our Staff threw their favourites on the table and it escalated into this glorious list of music.

Without a doubt, 2019 has been offering many immortal metal albums already, even it is only half way done. We are more than curious to see what the rest of the year has to give, but also really happy what we have hear so far.

The list itself is compiled as follows: The album that got the most the crossover potential amongst our varied tastes in metal and music in general – hitting home to majority of us, so to speak, ranked the highest. Nevertheless, all the staff picks were included as these are the records that need to be heard and to be checked out in 2019, at least according to TMW.

Enjoy!

1. KRYPTS – CADAVER CIRCULATION
“Krypts have been slowly, but steadily climbing up the global death metal family tree and with their finest album to date, they are reaching the very top of that timber. The highest ranking album for us in the first parts of 2019.”

2. SPIRIT ADRIFT – DIVIDED BY DARKNESS
“Another collective favourite of our Staff, Spirit Adrift doomed their way to our hearts with a bang. Blame it on the riff.”

3. NUCLEUS – ENTITY
“Nucleus have bravely decided to go where nobody else dares to go and have brought us a marvel of an record, from the final frontiers of experimental death metal.”

4. VARGRAV – REIGN IN SUPREME DARKNESS
“Just as addictive as in the first time in listening, Reign in Supreme Darkness remains as the absolute black metal favourite of our Staff this year. The most thorough as an experience.”

5. NOISEM – CEASE TO EXIST
“The gnarliest of unholy marriages – thrash, death and grind, Cease to Exist is at the top of their game in 2019 and are NOT TO BE MISSED. If you have not heard them, add a never-ending loop of Arnie’s “Do it now” in your very brain until you have checked this beast out.”

6. IDLE HANDS – MANA
“There is a hefty underground buzz going on globally around Idle Hands and it is definitely not a hype. Everybody should take the moment of their time and give this enchanting album a go, as they really are going to places real soon.”

7. WORMWITCH – HEAVEN THAT DWELLS WITHIN
“Everything one could ask from a metal album that has elements of black metal, melody and crust in it. Classic already.”

8. INTER ARMA – SULPHUR ENGLISH
“Emotional, powerful, and absolutely crushing in every sense. The kings of psychedelic death metal return to form and this time in a heavier way.”

9. LORD DYING – MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM
“The best of metal, grunge and progressive rock – all in one album. Easy to get impressed with.”

10. SOEN – LOTUS
“An album that reminds us of the magic in the music and how exceptional a thing it can be. With Lotus, Soen have stepped up on every level to be the leaders of progressive metal world.”

11. PULCHRA MORTE – DIVINA AUTEM ET ANILES
“Another death doom favourite of ours this year. More Paradise Lost than Krypts and it definitely is not a bad thing!”

12. POSSESSED – REVELATIONS OF OBLIVION
“The most anticipated metal album of 2019? Could very well be and not a single bit disappointing.”

13. HAUNT – IF ICARUS COULD FLY
“NWOTHM done right! Haunt never fail to deliver tasty riffs that keep the head banging all day long!”

14. PERIPHERY – HAIL STAN
“A staff favourite with multiple mentions. Not maybe the most guttural record around, but very captivating and well crafted.”

15. OVERKILL – WINGS OF WAR
“Even thrash metal might have lost some ground to death and black metal in past decades, some things never go out of style and one of them is OverKill. Another damn fine hour from these gentlemen of timeless mosh.”

16. ILLIMITABLE DOLOR – LEADEN LIGHT
“Heavier than an asteroid and more fragile than a finest of crystal, Leaden Light is Funeral Doom in its absolute best. It has been years since we have heard Funeral Dooming this good.”

17. CROPSY MANIAC – CARNAGE EP
“Looking for outstanding underground extremity? Vile and evil? Well, you have it here. Don’t sleep on it!”

18. SINMARA – HVÍSL STJARNANNA
“Icelandic Black Metal at its finest! Like lava spewing out the mouth of a volcano! The leaders of the style at the moment.”

19. NONE – DAMP CHILLS OF LIFE
“Maybe the bleakest, most depressed album in our list. That alone speaks volumes.”

20. IN THE BURIAL – LAMENTATIONS: Of Deceit and Redemption
“These symphonic death metallers from Australia might be relatively unknown to some, but it is about to change as their latest album should win all the fans of Puritanical Euphoric Misantrophia -era Dimmu Borgir on their side with great ease. Violent, melodic and intelligent.”

21. FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE – VELENO
“A punishing and yet surprisingly dynamic affair, not too far from the more symphonic end of almighty Vader. A definite TMW Staff recommendation.”

22. HANNES GROSSMAN – APOPHENIA
“The third solo album from one of the undisputed talents in metal. A record by a man behind the drumkit of Alkaloid, Blotted Science, Hate Eternal and Obscura to name a few, should not be missed by any.”

23. IMPRECATION – DAMNATIO AD BESTIAS
“Occult, Satanic death metal from the very depths of extreme metal underground. Say no more, nudge nudge.”

24. ABNORMALITY – SOCIOPATHIC CONSTRUCTS
“There have been a few great tech death releases out this year already, but our weapon choise is Sociopathic Constructs by Abnormality. Quintessence of the genre’s sound.”

25. POUNDER – UNCIVILIZED
“With their debut album Pounder give us a plethora of riffs along with catchy choruses that will have you singing in the shower. Great musicianship on this one from some veterans in the game trying something different than their usual stuff.”

26. MINORS – ABJECT BODIES
“Hard hitting hardcore with powerviolence parts. A marvellous combo of heaviness and emotion.”

27. GODS FORSAKEN – SMELLS OF DEATH
“Death metal in the very meaning of the word(s). Like a meat cutter gone mad and we love it for that.”

28. GOREGÄNG – NEON GRAVES
“Old School death metal with hints of hardcore in the sound. Another crossover great of the year with the list topping Wormwitch.”

29. INFERNAL CONJURATION – INFERNALE METALLUM MORTIS
“Fast, pummeling riffs. Finger shattering divebomb solos. These guys really came on strong. In Infernale Metallum Mortis they channel their inner Slayer and give us a FEROCIOUS metal record.”

30. FROZEN SOUL – ENCASED IN ICE demo
“Hard to believe this is a demo just, as it kicks majority of the full albums to dust. Have not heard it yet? You should!! In hopes of a quick debut album release.”

31. DEATHSPELL OMEGA – FURNACES OF PALINGENESIA
“In many ways, Deathspell Omega have delivered a follow up to Mayhem’s Ordo Ad Chao. A black metal album floating in a universe of it it’s own.”

32. FIRESPAWN – ABOMINATIONS
“The missing link between Florida death metal and the Swedish sound. Like Unleashed on steroids.”

33. WINTERWOLF – LYCANTROPHIC METAL OF DEATH
“The real sound of old school underground death metal. Smart riffs and somewhat punky in attitude. Did we mention the Demilich connection already?”
