When Fenriz from Darkthrone gives a band his seal of approval you know that it’s something pretty damn special. If you follow me on a personal level then you know that I will take anything Fenriz says quite seriously. Mork are a Black Metal band hailing from Norway, and their newest album Det Svarte Juv will be released on April 19th via Peaceville Records.
The Norwegian Black Metal scene as I am sure most know has a pretty rich history and there are plenty of bands out there who try to remain “true” to the classic sound but few really accomplish this without sounding like every other band. Mork however are on another level, they embrace the scene and carry the torch, burning ablaze right into the deepest darkest forest….. And although that was a very generalized statement I am sure you see my point in all this… Mork have that special something.
This band is the brainchild of Thomas Eriksen who handles everything on his own, but for being a One Man act Det Svarte Juv is a fantastic effort. According to social media however Mork have a full live lineup and they are ready to tackle shows.
There are moments of cold Black Metal darkness, transparent and tangible in feeling. Melodic guitars transport the listener into the deepest corners of the mind. There are traces of sadness and grief that are prominent in the music.
Vocally Thomas executes things cohernently and adds enough variety to keep things interesting, even mixing in clean vocals in some sections. This album is equal parts second wave Black Metal and Black n Roll, with plenty of fun infectious sections to please avid fans of the extreme metal scene.
It has been a long time since I can say a band has truly encompassed that classic Black Metal sound that leaves you with goosebumps. It really takes me back to when I first discovered the genre and realized that Black Metal would play a pivotal part in my ever growing musical journey. This is definitely worth a listen upon its release and prepare to be taken hold by it completely.
